Episodes Season Three (DVD) Review

British writers face the US studio system – that’s a real grudge match comedy.
Sean (Stephen Mangan) and Beverly Lincoln (Tamsin Greig) are two British television writers. Coming hot from multiple BAFTA award wins for their show Lyman’s Boys they are approached by an American television executive looking to create an American version of their show for his network.
Tempted by the potential fortune from syndicated rights they agree to head stateside and before you know it these two British writers are preparing their show for an American audience. There’s only one catch – it’s too ‘British’. So the network has some notes, for example changing the lead of the show from a Patrick Stewart style British classically trained actor to someone a little more….Matt LeBlanc (as an extreme version of himself). Then as the idea of a boarding school headmaster wouldn’t really fit Matt LeBlanc why not make him a hockey coach? Then you can’t really keep the name Lyman’s Boys can you? So why not call it Pucks!
That’s network ‘retooling’ for you. Take an approached hit and give it some ‘notes’. Forced to cast LeBlanc and an actress who has has more plastic surgery than a barbie doll these two must deal with the networks ‘suggestions’ and try to make the best of a bad situation. Even their former assistant is having a thriving movie career so there’s no turning back now.
In the third season Sean and Beverly are at the end of their rope. The shows ratings are tanking and there’s a new network executive looking to change the face of broadcasting…just not too much. Working with the strongly looming chance of being cancelled everyone is looking for their next role and abandoning ship early. Being moved to Saturday night is like being unofficially cancelled and when that word comes down even Matt is jumping ship, or at least trying to. Only Pucks isn’t dead yet, even when Sean and Beverly try to kill it themselves and escape back to England.
Extras include in the first season’s release a making-of featurette and none on the second season. In the third season release there’s a blooper reel which is a nice though if a little light compared to most extras which makes the first seasons making-of bonus even more of a priority to own.
FINAL THOUGHTS
Watching Episodes is quite reminiscent of watching Entourage. There’s the office comedy about going on during shooting but there’s also half the running time focused on the strange goings on around Sean and Beverly’s lives as they try to reconcile and face Matt’s idiotic Hollywood temper tantrums and antics.
It’s playing on the cultural gap where what appears normal in the US is bizarre behavior to the British. There’s fun to be had here and it works well for the premise of two foreigners looking to cash in on the American dream. Watching from the first season is essential as it’s hard to catch up to speed otherwise. Be sure to check out the first two seasons combo boxed release out now too!

I have fond memories of old-school RPGs like Baldur’s Gate and Neverwinter Nights, so having a game like Divinity come to life after a Kickstarter is a great thing. The game is in beta now, but it already plays like a fully fleshed-out game. You slowly get sucked into a…
Free Lives Games’ ode to the great big, blockbuster action heroes of yore is incredibly impressive, and a game that few should miss out on. I swear no game ever wants me to give it a 10/10. While nothing is perfect though, Broforce looks like it is going to be…
Lose yourself in the colorful city of Tinkertown. Rarely does a game come along that an entire family can legitimately play and enjoy. Either it’s way too hard for the kids, contains just a tad too much adult content, or it’s just plain too easy and annoying for anyone over…
Let’s face it, apart from Guardian of Light; Eidos has struggled to find purchase on this generation of console with the Tomb Raider franchise. So much good will and love for the character down the train as poorly executed sequel after sequel chased the pace that Uncharted had set almost…
The original Medal of Honour series was something of a ground breaker of it’s time. The reboot that EA attempted last year.. was not. At best it managed to be mediocre in it’s attempts to take on Call of Duty serving up stereotypical events, run of the mill gun play…
One of the biggest issues with competitive games (Starcraft 2, League of Legends, SFIV, etc) is that any balancing changes made affects both the competitive and non-competitive communities of the game. This means that competitive gameplay can remain unbalanced, broken, or substandard until fixes are implemented that don’t also break…
With the Olympic games right around the corner, everyone is getting hyped and excited. Which countries will come out on top? Which athlete will be next on the Wheaties box? It’s a lot of fun to get caught up in the waves of emotion, really getting into the moment. But…
Is Endless Space worth your space-time? Endless Space is the latest is the entrant into the catalogue of 4X strategy games that require players to build an empire through exploring, expanding, exploiting and exterminating. This is an interesting genre, because games of this ilk seem to stand up better over…
“Every player’s action has consequences for the war effort.” Reto-Moto’s Heroes and Generals comes with an interesting concept: a massive multiplayer first person shooter game where every player’s efforts affect the overall war effort. Differing greatly from typical FPSs like Call of Duty or Battlefield where only a single battle…
Torchlight 2′s beta is over, but was it click-tacular? Torchlight is a favourite game of mine, let’s just get that out of the way in the first place. While this may colour my opinions, if Torchlight 2 was anything other than an improvement on the first game it would conversely…
It’s magically derivative! Warlock: Master of the Arcane is my first visit to the high fantasy world of Ardania that has been featured in several games across a few different genres beginning with the real-time strategy game Majesty: The Fantasy Kingdom Sim way back in the year 2000, and more…
Let’s rock this race track! Gamepires brings you your newest racing obsession, Gas Guzzlers: Combat Carnage. With sleek shiny cars, beautifully done landscapes, and loads of fabulous explosions….what’s not to like? Well, there are a few things, but we’ll get to those later. The preview build I was given is…
Nothing is true, everything is permitted… again. The Assassin’s Creed franchise is running on tired legs. Since its inception in 2007 the series has grown in strength but a yearly iteration cycle has seen the formula become overly familiar. As with any large-scale franchise that finds itself falling victim to…
Mass-multiplayer real-time tank-based warfare… sounds pretty damn good on paper. Does anyone remember Westwood Studios? If you do, it’s probably because you play/ed at least one of the first Command & Conquer games. When EA shut down the studio in 2003, some of the folks left launched their own studio:…
Thar be pirates in this here RPG…..yar! Ahem……few things bring such joy to the hearts of gamers and geeks everywhere as pirates. The eye patches, the rum, the parrots, the cursing, the bloodthirsty battles for booty (and treasure too!) – what’s not to love? Gamers have seen a fair share…
Warlock: Master of the Arcane is another offering from the fine folks at Paradox. This time, however, it’s a clear departure from their usual offerings. Warlock is set in a fantasy setting, where you create a bustling civilization. You build different training grounds to create troops to defend and conquer,…
A lot of the time, mobile gamers will find themselves with a short coffee (or kit-kat) break, maybe even an extended commute (subway, anyone?). And during these breaks, they don’t always have time to play a full fledged game. And why should they have to? There’s that special genre of…
Dude! Crusader Kings! If you don’t really get the reference, perhaps you should take the time to watch Paradox’s live action trailer for their upcoming 2012 release of Crusader Kings 2. The video is funny, if a bit off-topic, but what it tries to convey is probably easier said here:…
Is 2011 the year of misogynist? Duke’s back, we’ve had one Serious Sam game already and CroTeam are busily making the final changes to Serious Sam 3: BFE. One thing is for certain, I’d take Serious Sam over Duke pretty much 6 days out of any week. Getting hands on…
“It is the year 888. Wind-blasted snow fields have covered the world of Environ for centuries. Survivors in this ice age are few and isolated, caged by the bitter cold. If they travel, the world itself seeks to devour them.” And so begins A Valley Without Wind, a “procedurally generated…
A look at the latest game in EA’s long running racing series. The Need For Speed franchise has been around for a while, but in the last couple of years, EA have been pushing it hard. When it comes out, The Run will be the 5th Need for Speed game…
Getting some time with the newest installment in Turn 10′s racing series. If you’re an Xbox 360 owner and you love your cars, then you’re almost certainly getting excited about the imminent release of the latest entry in Turn 10′s racing series, Forza Motorsport 4. So how is it shaping…
A look at what’s different with this year’s main WWE game. Apart from the name. THQ announced that they were dropping the SmackDown vs Raw name from their annual WWE franchise, opting for the much shorter WWE 12 instead. And the name isn’t the only thing that’s changed. For this…
When it was suggested that I take the review copy of Swords and Soldiers for iOS I physically groaned. Not another defence strategy title! Luckily Justin convinced me otherwise and I found the game to be totally awesome! Well the developers are at it again with the PSN & XBLA…
Indie shooter featuring shooting, grenades and more grenades. Sometimes there’s nothing more satisfying than just running around, shooting monsters and blowing things up. This is pretty much the premise of Pineapple Smash Crew, the latest game from British one man studio Rich Make Game, consisting of game designer Rich Edwards….
We go one-on-one with the UK’s latest and greatest stuntman – Joe Danger. We appear to have had a “special” bond with Hello Games since before they dropped their multi-award winning first title, Joe Danger on PSN. The reason being? We both seem to just love their games! Joe Danger…
This is Red Faction IV’s, shall we say, ‘pièce de résistance’…
How many times have you played a video game and thought to yourself “This game would be sooo much better if the music didn’t suck”? Indie developer Dejobaan Games fixes that problem nicely with its new game 1…2…3…Kick It! (Drop That Beat Like An Ugly Baby) by making your music…
While comparisons to Diablo are certain, they are also vastly unwarranted. Yes, you play from top down, yes, there are spells. However, a few similarities does not a Diablo clone make. Magicka sets you up as a smallish wizard just trying to make his way through a generic fantasy world….
Magic: The Gathering – Tactics is online game from Sony Online Entertainment that is set to be unleashed on the world at large on January 18th of 2011. This game is (obviously) based on the very popular playing card game that has earned millions of players and collectors around the…

We spend an hour in awe as the two of id’s top designers talk us through the awesome world of RAGE. Come find out why this is NOT Borderlands. RAGE is one of those titles we’ve all seen listed and quoted for what seems like years now. Everyone thought that…
A look at the latest addition to the long running racing series. The Need for Speed franchise has been through the hands of a number of developers since the original game way back in 1994. The next game to bear the name will be Hot Pursuit – not to be…
Could this be the first mainstream success for Epic’s recently purchased People Can Fly studio? I’m not the hugest fan of epic games. For no particular reason to be honest, I just think the sentiment passes me by. Gears is totally “meh!” for me, always has been and playing it…
I keeeellll you!! When a multiplayer Assassin’s Creed title was announced, I was firmly in the sceptic’s camp. However, after playing it at the Eurogamer Expo, it has jumped from not on my radar to being my most anticipated game. The multiplayer is not like anything I’ve ever played before…
No, your eyes don’t deceive you, it really was playable. It’s been a long time since we last saw a full Gran Turismo game. Gran Turismo 4 came out for the PS2 way back in 2004, and since then Forza Motorsport, arguably the Xbox 360′s nearest equivalent, has spawned 3…
Playing with the sequel to BioWare’s excellent fantasy RPG. The release of Dragon Age: Origins in 2009 added another impressive strong to BioWare’s RPG bow, and they have supported the title with plenty of DLC, which ended with last month’s release of the ‘Witch Hunt’ DLC. The sequel, Dragon Age…
Hands on with Splash Damage’s upcoming first person shooter. Back at last year’s Eurogamer Expo, we got to sit in on a developer session for Brink, which was held by the game’s director Paul Wedgwood. It’s fair to say we were quite intrigued and excited by what the game had…
Sports Champions convinced me to buy Playstation Move.
So many explosions, so little time… Motorstorm is fiery, a racer which has you powering through all terrains in a variety of ridiculous vehicles. Apocalypse will be the fourth Motorstorm title, after two Playstation 3 games and a PSP/PS2 wintry version. The basic formula of pedal to the metal is…
I’ve inadvertently created Move-bashing. The Fight has a fundamental flaw of trying to be more than it is, it being a semi-game that lets players beat up poorly-designed animated thugs in prison with silly punches. You’d think a game like The Fight would be well-suited for Playstation Move since it’s being developed…
So I make no secret of the fact I LOVE Bioshock. It was my game of the year last year by a long way. Yeah COD4 was a great game and I am still playing that. Halo Jesus really was not the game it should of been – please don’t…
